Teaching
the patient to help take charge of their own health will not only
speed their recovery, but will enable them to use techniques learned
to avoid or self treat any recurrences. A major emphasis is put
on the patient becoming able to effectively use exercise, self-treatment
techniques (like self acupressure/trigger point and strain/counterstrain)
and body mechanics modification to self manage their symptoms for
increased comfort now as well as prevention of re-injury. Many
'tricks' of therapy are easily taught to patients for reduction
of pain and spasm between sessions.
As life in general can be
stressful, limitations and pain from an injury can increase stress.
Group instruction in stress management techniques and relaxation
sessions are given regularly. Many of our patients ask for repeat
relaxation sessions because they find them so helpful.
Exercise is a very important
component of treatment at SJPT.
Each patient is given customized exercises appropriate for their
needs to help reduce pain, increase strength and flexibility.
Lumbopelvic and cervicothoracic stabilization exercises including
rollers and gym ball are taught for core stability so that the
patient can learn to move without pain, and to help reduce future
recurrences for chronic problems.
Pilates mat exercises are taught to hlep with trunk strengthening also.
We teach patients how to safely
do stretching and strengthening exercises at home and at the
gym, as well as contract-relax stretching. Chi Kung sequences
for improved flexibility and energy are very popular with our
patients (See Chi Kung page.)
Instructions in ergonomics
and body mechanics (how to move your body most effectively) are
used for more rapid return to pain free activities. Instruction
in work tasks like how to set up your desk to decrease irritation
from carpal tunnel or neck problems, or how to lift a heavy box
correctly can make a major difference in pain levels, even without
other interventions. This also applies for day-to-day activities
including how to lift a toddler out of the car seat, mop the
floor or even how to modify your golf swing to avoid back pain.
Additional specialty areas:
Treatment of post-partum and pregnancy related pain.
Work Capacity Evaluation and work conditioning are designed to help the
injured worker return to their regular and customary job duties more
easily.
