Teaching patients self-treatment techniques for self pain management is what will
ultimately give the patient control over their pain and improve their ability to
easily do daily activities. Self-treatment of pain including headaches with acupressure has been
documented for over 3,000 years. Even if you don’t believe the theories behind how
Traditional Chinese Medicine works, research and practice have shown it to be effective when added
on to Western medical care. In an acupuncture clinic, use of specific acupuncture points per patient
would be determined by pulse and tongue diagnosis to determine where the ‘energy
imbalance’ is. Our patients are taught these acupressure points in more of a cookbook
approach for temporary relief of pain through use of points that may correlate with Travell
myofascial trigger points. Melzack found a 70% correlation of acupuncture points for musculoskeletal
pain with Travell muscle trigger points. Our patients have found these points to be highly effective
in reducing and/or eliminating headaches within a few minutes. Although it may seem strange to
press on the hands or feet to reduce headaches, these points (LI4 and Li3) are commonly used in
acupuncture for head pain. Additional customization with points on the neck or additional points
may be needed for some headaches.
Prolonged (1/2 to 5 minutes) pressure or massage on selected points usually causes release of
muscle spasm and pain. Do not just mash down hard, start pressure gradually. If you have a headache
at the time, these points may be extremely tender initially, then become less tender as pressure
continues. Please visist our acupressure page for additional information regarding acupressure in physical
therapy. |
